This could be a difficult question, but the answer is very simple. The Bible is God’s tool in teaching us how to be human and how to live; how to interact with one another, how to treat the earth and things that belong to others, how to think of yourself, how to think of others, how to react in certain situations, who we are and why we exist. All of these things and more are within this book called, the Bible, the God of Word, the Book of Life.
There is a famous quote by C.S. Lewis, a former atheist, turned born-again Christian, that says, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
This is the very same with the Bible. Why can we believe and how can we believe? When coming to a book with any sort of opinion, many times, how you read it is influenced by the opinion you already have of it or the subject matter. When coming to the Bible, simply seeking to understand, this is when we can come to see for ourselves why an understanding of the Bible is of great value to us.
There’s another great quote by C.S. Lewis to further my point, “My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust?”
There are many things that innately come to us as a universal truth, right and wrong; good or bad. However the more wayward and individualistic the world gets, the more the truth becomes muddy and complicated. However, the truth isn’t complicated. People feel stress, anxiety, and depressed; why? Because within them there’s something shouting, “This isn’t right!” If Mankind were truly meant to go the way that it’s going, then there wouldn’t be any issue. We wouldn’t feel any pain or heartache, because that would be what we’re made for. C.S. Lewis questioned how he even got the idea of what’s truly just and unjust.
Humanity, in general, has some concept of what is good and what is evil; what is right and what is wrong. The thing within us; our conscience, our spirit; knows and feels something is wrong with this world or even within our very selves. What, within ourselves, are we comparing with this ‘wrong’? We can only find this when we know our Creator and His intent in creating this world and in creating us. It’s only through the Bible and seeking to understand it deeply. We should understand the Bible because, through it, we come to understand ourselves and not only the world, but the universe around us. We come to know that we are not just the individual, but the important part of something bigger than we can ever imagine.
Matthew 4:4 “But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
